Ouch, my hip hurts and my glute does not work: Testimonial from Dave the rock climber

Ouch, My Hip Hurts and My Glute Does Not WorK

Testimonial from Dave S in Minneapolis, MN, rock climbing enthusiast

After a long hiatus off of running I recently started up again, primarily trail running. I’ve been told on two separate occasions (about a month ago and about fifteen years ago) that my right glute does not engage while I run.

I suspect it’s why my running has always felt a little awkward. Previously, I just stopped running since it wasn’t enjoyable.

This time I sought Mike’s help getting my muscles to work the way they’re supposed to.

After seeing me walk, Mike determined that neither of my glutes were engaging properly. It took about an hour but Mike got both glutes functioning again.

I left with some Z-Health drills to make sure they continue to work the way they’re supposed to.

I will see Mike again and I’m looking forward to enjoying running again.

Thanks Mike.

Dave S.  Minneapolis, Minnesota

Thanks Dave for stopping by to get those glutes (butt muscles) going again!

Yes you read that right, in one session we got his glutes going again so that he can actually enjoy exercise and running again. One of them had not been working for 15 YEARS! I know that seems hard to believe, but with the right information it is possible to get your body working better now than ever before, all with less pain.

What Did We Do?

We followed this Z-Health based approach as below

Z Health Method for Injuries and Athletic Performance

In Dave’s case we needed all three -  joint, eye movements, and vestibular (head movements) to get him on the right track again.

Will It Stay?

He will work on his drills for a few times a day and this works to upgrade the software in his brain to keep his glutes working and keep running fast and fun.

Shoulder Testimonial for Joint Mobility work with Mike T Nelson

Testimonial on Joint Mobility Work Z-Health Style and Mike T Nelson for a Painful Shoulder

Here is another testimonial.  A HUGE thanks to Chris for stopping by the Extreme Human Performance Center in White Bear Lake, MN for 2 sessions.

For several years I’ve had a painful left shoulder that kept me from many things I like to do. The doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists could only tell me that there’s no specific injury or structural issue.

After only two sessions with Mike T Nelson, and a bit of homework on my part, the range of motion in my left shoulder has improved greatly and I began to find my lats again!

Now I can do several exercises I couldn’t do just a week before, others have improved, and my shoulder over-all just hurts less.  My shoulder is not 100% yet but it feels more stable than it has in years and I expect it to continue to improve.

Thanks Mike!

Saturday Strongman Training In White Bear Lake Minnesota

Saturday Strongman Training In White Bear Lake Minnesota

Winter is fast approaching here in the area below Canada that is still in the US (yes, that is Minnesota), so it was time to get after some strongman medleys.

Here is one you can do that does not take too much equipment.  All you need are some of the items below the video here.

Saturday Strongman Fun Video

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

1) Tire sled with rope handle

Sprint forward

Drag backwards

(I used 90 lbs in the tire sled)

For sprinting forward, stay up on your toes as this is a sprint!

Pulling backwards will destroy your inner quads like nothing else (in a good way).  Feel the burn!

Say Hello to My Little Friend

2) 16 lb sledgehammer strikes on the tire

15 left and 15 right

You can get one at any hardware store, Home Depot, etc.  If you are new to this, start with an 8 lb one.

3) 24 kg Kettlebell Swings x 10-20

Great lower body drill and if you don’t have kettlebells, get with the program!  You can get them from Dragon Door.

4) Bodyweight push ups x 10-15

You just need your body.  It does not come any cheaper!

I record total time and avg heart rate.

Notice I did not sprint back to the camera. Ha! This one should get you going.

Free the Feet!

I like doing the medley work in Vibrams, but make sure you work up to it and do your mobility work (I like Z-Health for mobility).  Don’t be surprised if the “insides” of your feet fee sore the next day.   Mobility feet also allow better hip function and more strength/power.

Messed up feet and ankles = messed up hips = piss poor strength

Get them fixed up now!  Email me on the contact page at the top if you have questions.

Use Your Imagination!

You don’t have to do the exact same thing, use your imagination and what you have in your garage.

Other Ideas for Equipment

So you think this looks pretty sweet (and it is) and want to know how to implement some of this stuff into your training?  The big questions is how can you get some cool new toys for cheap?  Well Joe and Jedd have done all of this for you, so be sure to check out their product Do It Yourself Strength Equipment

I bought the DVD and it is great! Excellent ideas that you can do for cheap also!

I also need to send props to Jerry Schrek at http://www.varietytrainer.com/ for pointing it out to me originally.

Click one of the links below to get started on your own homemade strength toys now!  Heck, you make one thing from the DVD and it pays for itself!

Drop me some comment love and let me know what time of circuit you set up.   I also want to hear how many freaks out there can shatter my time!  Let me have it!

Basic Kettlebell Press Videos and Tips

The Kettlebell Press

Basics are best, but it seems some tend to forget that. Heck, I tend to forget that at times.

Below are two videos on how to perform the kettlebell (KB) press; a basic strength move that you will also learn at the RKC.

The first one reviews the barebones of how to do it correctly. I had to learn this the hard way and thought I was doing it correctly, and I was not even close! Luckily, I did a session with Sr. RKC Geoff Neupert a few years ago and he set me straight. Over the past couple years I’ve played around with it and taught others, so check out the short clip on how to get the basics of the KB Press down pat.

If you care looking for a bit more variety on your KB Press and you are doing great on the standard version, here are a few more options for you

1) Bottoms Up KB Press

2) Open Palm KB Press

3) Pizza KB Press

4) By the Horns KB Press

For further information, check out my article at Dragon Door

4 Tips for KB Pressing Power

by Mike T Nelson, RKC, Z-Health Master Trainer

All of this is a great start, but it is not a substitute for a session with a coach who can evaluate your form in person.

Email me at michaelTnelson@yahoo.com if you are interested in a Z-Health/Kettlebell combo session to take your kettlebell work to the next level and make sure you have the basics down cold.

If you are not in the White Bear Lake Minnesota area, look for a Z-Health or RKC in your neighborhood.
Drop me a comment and let me know how your Kettlebell Press is coming along!

Geoff Neupert’s “Kettlebell Secrets Teleseminar” wraps up tonight, Thursday Aug 27 with Pavel Tsatsouline himself.

Listen as Pavel simplifies the process of muscle-building identifying the only three components necessary for building slabs of rock-hard muscle, dispelling the myths of the “musclemags”…

Athletic Training in White Bear Lake, MN: A Tour of the Xtreme Human Performance (XHP) Center

I get the question a lot about what it is like to train at the Extreme Human Performance center, so I thought that since I am the research guy, I would do an experiment.

I invited Dave Sandel over since he also trains here in the Twin Cities Minnesota area.  He came over last week and we did some Z-Health on him, got down to business training and he pulled a deadlift PR (personal record) and even took out the 400 lb tire.   We throw in some Kettlebell work just for good measure too.

What Happened?

Before I get to that, here is a short tour of the private facility.

What the heck, that is your garage man!

Yep!  Truth be told I used to train at a big club in the Twin Cities here part time and I could not take it.   You don’t need a room full of chrome to get stronger, move better, and kick a$$.    You don’t need a $4,000 pulley a “wazi strength thing” and stay the hell off the treadmill!

You need basic, top of the line, equipment.   Basics are best, yet nobody wants to practice them.  Lift heavy stuff, set it down, make sure you don’t degrade your movement (if you leave the gym dragging your right leg, did you really get any better?)    Spend your money on the basics and then spend a ton of money on education!  Figure out better (not always newer) techniques.   The body is very complex, why do you think a weekend certification is going to cover it?  Pleeeeeze.  Focus on the nervous system,  since is the chief in charge and runs the show.

How I Ended Up in My Garage

So after the gym I was at filed bankruptcy on me (I did not even know, I found out by going there one night and found a note on the door!).  I checked into a few other places and could not stomach it.   I could not take all the chrome, had to keep your shoes on all the time (love barefoot training), can’t drop a heavy weight and some places you can’t even deadlift!  What?  The most basic function and you can’t even perform it there?  Time for plan B and vowed to set up a place that I could control, right outside my door, done by my rules to get athletes  RESULTS.   I LOVE it and would not trade it for any chrome gym around, no matter the amount of money.  Oh yeah, I control the stereo too—hehehe.  If you bring your Jonas Brothers CD you will NOT be let it.

What Happened to Dave?

I will let Dave tell you first hand.  Head on over to his blog below.  Keep in mind that if you are easily offended, read with caution.   It is all Dave and I did not even see it until he posted it online; so the account is not altered in any way.
