Thanks to my buddy Shawn for sending me this one! Sweet!
Extreme Movement is a combination of information from joints + eyes + inner ear!
Off to a broomball game Friday night and then out with some of the guys/girls in town for Grip n Rip and it is going to be a blast. I will have to bug out at around noon on Sat from Grip n Rip since Jodie and I are headed to Baja Mexico for some R and R and to get in some kiteboarding! Whoo ha!
No worries, as I will have some posts already keyed up, but I may be very late on comments; so please bear with me. Heck, they said they have internet but from what I heard I would be surprised that the internet is actually working though.
Merry Christmas to everyone and time for feats of strength!
This is the Christmas edition and tons of great stuff. I trust that you are having some great times with family and loved ones, so take time to enjoy it.
The Great Kaz is probably the greatest strongman ever. If this video does not get you excited to go lift something heavy you need to check out your pulse!
Notice how easy he makes it LOOK. These feats are FAR from easy, but he is making them look easy. The squat is over 850 lbs I think and the deadlift is around 800 lbs (around the 2:30 mark).
Flipping cars–no problem! Pulling semis—bring it on! Wow.
Maybe it is the hair?
Festivus PRs
I am a huge Seinfeld fan, so I am sure you remember the Festivus episode. From the wikipedia entry on it says
“the holiday’s celebration, as shown on Seinfeld, includes an unadorned aluminum “Festivus pole”, practices such as the “Airing of Grievances” and “Feats of Strength”, and the labeling of easily explainable events as “Festivus miracles”.
One of my goals for 2009 was to deadlift 425 lbs (no belt) by the end of the year. I had planned to do that in a meet in July, but I ended up not doing a meet until September and pulled 413 lbs, then a few weeks later at the TSC pulled 420 lbs. I put my DL on hold after that and began to work on my squat since I felt it was holding my DL back (and was very weak). Fast forward to recently and I had planned to squat today, but noticed that I still have not made my DL goal.
I went into the Extreme Human Performance Center (my garage) and tested my DL using biofeedback. It tested great. Whoo ha. Warmup at 135, 225, 275, and 315 –all felt great and tested good. 365 came up fast and tested well. On
to 405 lbs. 405 in training most of the time is hit and miss, but it came up the fastest yet; so 425 was within reach and I made it.
Notice that I still need some hip work near the top as my hamstrings were shaky, but overall it felt pretty good (most PRs are never perfect).
I want to hear about YOUR Holiday “Feats of Strength” by placing a comment on what PRs (Personal Records) you have broken recently. Any PR counts, so post away! I want to see ATLEAST 10 comments here.
Happy Holidays
rock on Mike T Nelson
PS
If you don’t have any PRs to report, I have 1-2 spots open for online training. Email me HERE.

They are now off to the playoffs! Amazing. After a very long season, they had to ADD a game as a tie breaker and that game goes into sudden death.
While I was not able to watch the game and truth be told I am not a huge baseball fan, but when you play about 162 games and it comes down to the very last out; that is an extreme human performance by all the players. Congrats to the Minnesota Twins and good luck to them in the playoffs!
More Soon!
I’ve been working on my dissertation on Energy Drinks lately, so more updates coming soon. Add to this that I learned never to write a long blog post when online as if there is a computer issue it will all go “poof” and be gone. Um, not that I know anything about that.
Extreme Human Performance of the Week: Brett Favre to Greg Lewis TD Toss
Due to my crazy schedule I have not made time to watch a full Vikings game for some time, but today Jodie and I were hanging out for a bit and after she left around half time I debated about watching the rest of the Vikings vs 49ers game. Everyone knows I should spend that time working on my dissertation if I ever want to graduate, but my butt seemed like put crazy glued to the coach.
It was a back and forth game the whole time and it did not look good for the Vikings near the end. They were all out of time outs and only about 1:30 left on the clock and they needed a TD. Yikes.
In the past it would be a complete stumblefest as they would attempt to get a score, but would end up pissing away precious seconds on each play and all Vikings fan leave pulling out their purple hair.
This time was different!
Brett Favre and Greg Lewis to the Rescue!
Brett Favre lead them right down the field and had brilliant time management on the clock. With only seconds left he threw a strike to Great Lewis who made an AMAZING catch in the end zone. He went up and knew exactly where his entire body was in space, made sure his left foot was inside the line and dragged his right toe. You have to watch the video below, especially in slow motion. Stellar throw and dynamic catch.
What Did We Learn Today?
All exceptional athletes have an amazing movement map - they know exactly where their body is in space at all times. This is a combination of visual, vestibular (inner ear “balance”) and joint information to the brain (proprioception). If you want to go from here to Chicago, a detour through the UP of MI is not the best route!
Each one of the these components can be trained also, but rarely do you see them trained; even at an elite level. Virtually every athlete needs to start with joint mobility (I personally love Z-Health for this) to enhance their proprioception and thus their overall movement map
Better map = better performance
Congrats to the whole Vikings team and Brett Favre and Greg Lewis for the Extreme Human Performance of the week.
Who else watched the game today? What are your thoughts?
Efficient footwork is HUGE for performance! This is something that can be practiced though and is also taught in the Z-Health S Phase (Sport Phase) DVD set.
Notice that there is a single movement that is wasted! He also keeps his eyes fixated on the ball until it has left his racket. Amazing to watch.
Failure
I like what the announcer said about at 1 minute in
“Out of all the times he has tried that shot and failed…”
Fear of failure impedes almost all progress. You should fail as fast as possible. You need practice (reps) to succeed.
You will NOT be great on rep 1! You need perfect practice.
Keep failing and one time you will succeed. This is “successful failure”
Most are too afraid to fail and therefore never try. I know that is not you though. Fear is the mindkiller.
What are you going to practice this week? Let me know in the comments
Deadlift Technique Tips with Powerlifter Kent Johnson
I hope you have been paying attention to our Deadlift clinic here! Here is today’s lesson below. Only one more day left!
I am out in South Dakota currently at Jodie’s family reunion, but I will get to all comments once I am back this coming Monday. No fear, as part 5 is set to roll tomorrow.
Rock on! Come back tomorrow for the last day. Any comments/questions, let me know
