Jamey Jasta of the band Hatebreed
What Happened?
I know you are probably wondering who hijacked this blog, but as you know I am a huge music fan so I am going to go off on a rant on music and the most recent concert I saw here in the cold and snowy state of Minnesota.
If you still want your hardcore exercise info (sign me up) and miss me (hehe) check out the links below
Nick Tumminnello Don’t be the kind of strength coach who…
A huge thanks to Nick for including me on the list. While I would say I am more of a researcher than strength coach, that line gets fuzzy since I believe research needs to be applied. Some great tips there, so check it out.
Dr Mike Scott put together a great piece below from many great coaches/researchers and a huge thanks to him for including me
One Question, Many Answers
Music 101
I have about 1300 CDs the last time I counted. Yes, I collect CDs, those old skool silver things that you put in a CD player. While I love my ipod and I am not that big of a dinosaur, I still like getting the art work and listening to it how the final mix was supposed to be; not some sampled version of it on MP3. Yes, I own a record player too and have about 60 pieces of vinyl. I still remember buying my first CD player for $100 back in 9th grade. The first CD I ever bought was “Moving Pictures” by Rush. I was so amazed that you could just hit one button and it would automatically go to the next song. Wow. Ok, I am really dating myself now, so onward…..
Hatebreed Video
The new Hatebreed single is great and they are my new favorite lyrics
“Born to bleed fighting to succeed
Built to endure what this world throws at me” — Jamey Jasta
Here is the video for it.
Note: If you are against small snippets of violence, I would recomend you pass from it. I believe it was from the Saw VI movie, so watch at your own risk
In Ashes They Shall Reap
Born to bleed fighting to succeed
Built to endure what this world throws at me
Let me tell you of a force crashing through my veins again
Like a page torn from a chapter of a book of better days
In the moments that we see together some will never know
It’s these words that never give to justice screaming all alone
I was BORN to bleed fighting to succeed
Built to endure what this world throws at me
Born to bleed fighting to succeed
Built to endure what this world throws at me
You may trusted me an answer and put hope in
Me a seed
All these memories come haunt us if we still feel to believe
Now the fear we all once held is a breath we must attain
Because those who sow in flames in ashes they shall reap
Ashes are all that you’re left with what you sow in flames
Our life sorrows of my own creation saving sand for a love
Show Review
Ok, so I took a vacation day from work today to crank on business and mostly dissertation work; so you could argue that this blog post is a creative way for me to avoid my dissertation. Perhaps, but on to the show. I am going to go out on a limb here but I will bet a small sum that I was the only trying to sneak a protein bar into the show!
I missed Unearth since I wanted to get a lifting session in and I was behind on a bunch for other work. I have seen Unearth before and they are great. I got there as Cannibal Corpse just started. While I respect any band that has been around that long completely outside the mainstream, I can’t say I am a huge fan but they have a few great tracks.
If you want to see some crazy head banging on stage by a lead singer—this is your band! At one point he yells at the crowd
“I want to see everyone head banging to this next one. Short hair is no excuse. If you have a head on your shoulders I want to see you banging it. You can try to keep up with me but you will fail”
He was not kidding! Check out minute 1:15 in the video below.
I have been listening to metal for 20+ years now (wow, that makes me sound really old but in my defense I stared at age 15), and I still can’t understand half of what he is saying. I think he should cut back on the gargling with drano soaked razor blades perhaps.
Hatebreed!
Time for Hatebreed! Whoo ha! It was about 11pm and truth be told I am normally fast asleep, but they are one of my favorite bands of all times. I remember getting their second CD back in about 1997 when I was working at the Director of Loud Rock at the WMTU radio station. I put it in and was blown away. Wow. I’ve been a fan ever since. The energy and amazing motivational lyrics are second to none.
I was about 8 feet from the stage the whole time, so as Jamey Jasta walked on stage with his head down under his hoodie I could see him smiling. They ripped through quite a few old tracks actually only 2 I think from the new self titled album (which is great).
The crowd went nuts and people starting flying around every where. Soon, they were getting launched over the barrier in front as Jasta yells “make sure you give me a high five when you come over” and he was not kidding. There was a pretty constant flow of kids everywhere.
Hatebreed played for just over an hour with no encore (I dislike encores anyway) covering songs off every album. Everyone in the band did a killer job and I always love watching people do something that they truly enjoy and are incredibly passionate about.
Amazing show and well worth a night off and few hours lost sleep. If they ever come back through Minnesota again, you can bet that I will be there.
Any metal fans, give me a shout out in the comments! I know their are lots of lifters who are metal fans, because at every conference I go to I find them!
Rock on

I guess I am back to my dissertation now…..

Awesome post Mike. Sounds like we’ve got pretty similar music collections. First tape I bought was Motorhead – Overkill in grade 3. I didn’t end up buying a cd until I was in to my 20’s, The Accused – Grinning Like an Undertaker.
Have a good one!
Jason
Good stuff Jason and thanks for the comment!
Long live Lemmy!
