Preventing Neurodegeneration and New Eat Stop Eat Contest
New Contest
I did a very cool interview with Brad Pilon of Eat Stop Eat in yesterday’s post. I know everyone is super busy and the interview is a whole hour long, but I want to give you an incentive to check out the post by having another contest.
Review of Eat Stop Eat: Intermittent Fasting to Lose Body Fat
Starting now until this Friday Jan 15, 2010 at midnight central time, I am going to give away a free copy of my lectures on protein, fat and carbs. They will take you through all the basics and distill YEARS of info into about 4 hours. You will get them on MP3 so you can listen to them anywhere. I will have this product out for sale (at some point soon, silly dissertation work) so you will be getting it WAY in advance.
4 Hour lectures Series: The Truth About Protein, Fats and Carbs: For FREE?
No matter what your goal, you need to know about how protein, carbs and fat affect your performance; from recovery to fat loss. Now you can take time to read all the websites, all the latest research and sift through all the information out there or you can just sit back and listen to a lecture on each one. Nevermind that most of the information out there is conflicting and you will probably end up confused!
The lectures are from an Advanced 12 Week Nutrition online course I did this past summer; so you get to hear live questions being answered. The sound quality is good, but nothing stellar as I did not initially planned to release it; but after getting numerous questions about are fats evil, too many carbs will make my fat, too much protein will destroy my kidneys; I decided to release them and clear up some massive confusion.
Value: a normal hour of my time is currently $110 an hour x 4 hours = $440, you will get it for free IF you are selected!
- 1 lecture on protein
- 1 lecture on carbohydrates
- 1 lecture on fats
- All on MP3 to put on your ipod
Here is some feedback from the overall course that each person paid $300 for a full 12 week course (you are just getting the first 3 weeks)
Seriously, it was most invaluable.
Was it worth the money? Absolutely. Very thorough. I would sign up again for the same topic or similar ones. Keep me on your list please if that happens.
Jeanne Petrick, Chicago, IL
Occupation: Pilates Instructor
Was it worth the money? Yes
Mike is very up-to-date with current literature and research
Tom Gallo Grinnell, Iowa
Occupation Physical Therapist
Was it worth the money? Yes. It motivated me to probe more detailed into the material to ask questions that were not perhaps covered in the reading material.
No matter how much you know about nutrition ( I have some background) , a person can continue to learn and benefit from others who have studied and researched the same subject. Also, you are genuinely interested in assisting, answering questions and your sincerity comes across. I feel I have a great resource in you now and I could write to you at anytime and ask questions, etc.

Preventing Neurodegeneration
As you know I am a huge neuroscience geek and am convinced that the concept of brain neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to undergo physical changes) will have HUGE impacts to fitness, sports performance and overall health.
Dr. Bryan Walsh over at Precision Nutrition had a great article on Preventing Neurodegeneration that just came out, so check it out below.
Preventing Neurodegeneration
by Bryan Walsh
Take a moment and think about an elderly person you know.
* How well do they taste or smell their food?
* How good is their memory?
* How well can they balance or walk?
* How healthy is their digestion?
If they haven’t aged gracefully, chances are they can’t do any of those things very well. And you can thank their brain function for these symptoms of degeneration.
Anti-Aging Gone Wrong
The degree to which the elderly can perform normal daily activities is directly related to the amount of brain degeneration they’re experiencing in their twilight years. In fact, the anti-aging movement has it completely wrong. It’s not about hormones. It is about brain function.
When your brain stops functioning, your body stops functioning. And conversely, the healthier your brain, the healthier your digestion, your response to stress, your hormones and your response to exercise.
In this article, we’ll provide a broad overview of a very complex system in the body, the brain. Plus, we’ll share some ways of nutritionally improving your brain function today.
Your Brain – The Basics
Your brain is a vital organ that helps run every other system in our body. For example, 90% of the brain stem’s output goes into something called the pontomedulary reticular formation, which stimulates the vagus nerve.
Uh, what?
Well, that’s just a fancy way of saying that 90% of your brain’s output directly impacts activities such as digestion, gastrointestinal motility, enzyme production and salivation, and other parasympathetic activities.

Great stuff Keep it coming.
Thanks Matt! I really appreciate that, esp coming from you. How is the training going?
Some crazy box squatting going on here for sure!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8qK-2onHtY

Ah, the old Wallerian Degeneration. Marc Pick is a chiropractic neurologist and craniopath. Several years ago I saw him present at a seminar. He had video of nerve endings actually growing toward each other post adjustment. Very fascinating stuff. He’s done some amazing dissections and work on cranial anatomy and physiology, and a lot of work on dura and the cranio-respiratory system. Might be worth checking out.
Great post Mike. I’ve looked at Eat Stop Eat and some of Brad’s posts and articles before. I like your take and input on the diet plan. Hope you’ve been good.
No problem Mike. Training is in limbo since we moved 4 months ago. Still hammering away but had to adjust alot. Once we sell our house and buy one here I will be able to set up my equipment and get back at it full speed.
Do you have any info on lowering inflamation with food/drugs or anything?
Thanks PJ for the great info
Yes, neurology is very cool indeed.
Keep in mind that head/neck active mobility work is like self cranial work! As you know, many times since the head is the end of the force transfer, it can be a bottle neck for both performance and pain.
Do you have any recent research on the cranio-respiratory system. Last time I checked into it, I am not buying most of it (note, this does not mean that I don’t thin it is important, but I don’t buy many of the common theories).

Thanks Mark! Much appreciate the comment here.
Duh, I totally realized I forgot to send you the follow up Z drills. Drop me an email with the ones you had and I will try to look them up too. Sorry about that. Let me know how the drills went and are going for you and what new and crazy PRs you are setting!

Hi there Matt!
Thanks for the question and good luck on getting re-settled.
What issue are you dealing with? Pain? Performance? Just trying to get a better handle on it so I can give you a better answer.
For inflammation in general I like
1) fish oil, 3-5 GRAMS of EPA and DHA (again, check with doc)
2) protein at about 1gm/ lb body weight
3) tons of fruits and veggies
Beyond that I find that cats claw and curcumin can help. Wobenzyme (proteolytic enzymes) at about 8-12 tabs between meals can help speed recovery and remodeling too.
Let me know!

Mike,
Neck and head mobility is definitely key especially with the RCPM passing through the sutures and becoming continuous with the dura.
Any research on dura and CSF flow can probably be found at http://www.soto-usa.org . This is a research group associated with SOT chiropractic (definition on website).
here’s a link to a video by the Esposito brothers who have done tons of research with MRI’s and the cranio-dural system. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQHtsyzwMU&feature=related
If I might throw in my $.02 on the inflammation thing. With your fish oils look for a 5:1 ratio of DHA:EPA as these are the concentrations found in the body.
Also be aware that grains and grain fed animal products are high in omega 6 fats which can feed into the pro-inflammatory system.
Boswellia, an herb , has been shown to be as effective as some of the COX-2 inhibitors such as Celebrex without the side effects.

Mike ,
My initial reply got flagged by your spam filter probably because I included some links to a website and a video on CSF flow done on MRI. I think the message said you’ll have the option to approve it, if not let me know and I can send it via PM.
I found it and approved it. Thanks for the heads up and I will look over it soon. I had 753 spams in less than 7 days–yikes
More soon and thanks for all the great comments!

Well mike long story but it is for my Mom. She lost vision in her left eye a few months ago. Come to find out she has inflammation arteries behind her eyes. Don’t know why it happened but it did. They gave her prednisone (sp) and it took the vision from 20/1000 to 20/400 but there as some damage to the eye and it looks like it won’t get any better. They told her she would be on Prednisone for 6-9 months and I was just looking to see if we can improve some things with food or supplements.
Thanks again
Greetings PJ!
Thanks for the links and I will check them out. Sounds like we are in absolute agreement on the importance of a good working cranial system! I know personally that the more head/neck mobility work I do, I feel better and my performance in the gym goes up too.
Thanks for the info on Boswellia too. I have heard that and forgot about it–much appreciated!

I found it. I apologize to anyone that submitted comments and they got trapped in my spam filter. I am working to try to stay on top of it, but the amount of spam I am getting is making it almost impossible; so if you submitted a comment and I did not approve it within 24-48 hours, please try again possibly from a different email address.

Thanks for the follow up Matt and sorry to hear about your mom.
Again, check with the doc always, but the only other resource I can think of would be Can-C eye drops. I think it may only help the lens of the eye, but it may be worth checking into.

Thanks Mike. I just found out it is temporal arteriatus (sp).
Sorry to hear that Matt
The best bet is to work closely with her doctor. The only other idea would be to ask about a probiotic since many times these patients have been on antibiotics. If an athlete I work with has been on antibiotics within the past 1-2 years, they will want to try a probiotic to get the good bacteria in the gut going again. Vit D blood spot testing may be a possibility too since it is common for many to be low in it and it has a host of functions. Again, always check with the doc.
Take care and let me know if there is anything I can do or if other have thoughts, post them here

Matt,
Also consider testing for inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein. A product I use for arterial inflammation is Cyruta-Plus by Standard Process. It’s derived from buckwheat and is high in bioflavinoids to reduce the inflammation and high in the P factors to support arterial integrity. As Mike says work with the doctors.
@ Mike, I hope it’s ok to offer my opinion on the subject on your site. Feel free to delete if not.
Thanks Doc! Please feel free to chime in on those things at any time since I know you are more up to date on them.
