Von Gillette: Trainer and Mixed Martial Artist Athlete
“I had some pain in my right shoulder. After a few mobilizations (joint mobility work) in my first session with Mike, the pain was gone!
Mike has motivated me both as a fitness professional and an athlete to use the best methods for training and Mike definitely has them! Go see Mike if you have any kind of pain now”

A huge thanks to Von for stopping by for a training session to move better and get out of pain.
I tend to see a lot of shoulder issues from athletes for various reasons and he was having some right shoulder pain.
The big exercises for him were some joint mobility on his feet and ankles (left side) and right side wrist (Z-Health AP wrist drills).
We also had to do some eye movements (oculomotor) to get his left glute to fire up completely. Eye movements can get “wired’ to muscles and standard joint mobility work will NOT have an effect at times. Once we addressed his eye movements and did the joint mobility drill, the left glute fired right up! The nervous system is so cool!

Eye movements techniques? Never heard of that. Though I’ll tell ya, when doing punching bag training… I get fired up, vision gets sharper and my body tends to move better… maybe that’s a similar thing?
Anyways, I jumped on this cuz I’ve had a very bad shoulder injury. I’m talking quit training for 3 months + physiotherapy for 3 months… still hurts a bit as I’m getting back into it. It’s a pain.

Thanks for the comment!
Also, as HR (heart rate) goes up, gross motor actions (which can be a punch if you are expeirenced) get better; so that may be part of it. The downside is that cognitive (thinking) tasks get harder—an extreme example is tunnel vision.
What movement w the shoulder are painful?

Thanks for the clarification Mike.
Shoulder pain?
Well, anything with overhead moves like shoulder press, overhead triceps, even lateral raises if they go above horizontal. So I’ve switched my workouts to avoid those moves for a while…
I used to LOVE shoulder workouts back when I was injury-free, I’d press and press and go at it. It was one of my most developed muscles.

Thanks for the follow up Mark!
The things that I tend to help shoulder issues the most are mobility work for
1) same side wrist
2) opposite side hip
3) opposite side foot/ankle
4) thoracic spine
5) cervical spine
While that is not a guarantee, if done correctly it helps a ton in about 70-80% of the shoulder issues I see.
So you can try some mobility work on those areas and let me know how it goes. I currently use the Z Health R Phase for most joint mobility work to start.

What is an Eye movement’s technique? Is it really helped cure shoulder pain? Who invented that technique? Is that effective?
