Notice how they always turn their head or eyes to either spot where they will land or towards the ball. Notice the balance of tension and relaxation (open palm/hand). Amazing!
I am just finishing up Z Health I Phase (yes once again) and it has been great! Excellent reminders and more practice for me on the I Phase drills with some feedback which is always helpful.
I Phase works to integrate eye muscle movements and also vestibular (inner ear balance) into your practice. Remember that the body primarily gets information your joints (proprioception), eyes (visual and proprioception from eye muscle movements) and vestibular (inner ear-balance); so it makes sense for optimal athletic performance that you will need some work on each one of these systems AND a way to know that they are working correctly.
All of them feed into the brain via the nervous system and some times they can become “rewired.” For an example, see the link HERE so I Phase provides some cool tools to retrain the nervous system and gets you on the fast track to amazing movement!

Very interesting concept.
Thanks Bob.
I Phase is really amazing. I don’t see anyone else that is really integrating information from the joints (proprioception), eyes (visual and eye movements) and inner ear (vestibular-balance). Great stuff!

Mike,
Good stuff all around. I could stare at these pictures for hours, breaking down every little piece of the movement alphabet.
I also enjoyed your Failing Forward post – it got me thinking (even more than I already do)!
Best,
Katie
You did not include enough sexy bikini butts in your picture selection. Walsh and May won the gold, 100-plus matches in a row, and their butts are exceptional. Not to mention their movements are explosive, erratic, and mostly on target.
A scientific exploration of the movement of Olympians is just not complete without the inclusion of those amazing butts, not to mention the movement of the rest of their bodies.
Where’s your Olympic spirit, Mike?
Thanks for the comments Katie! Glad you enjoyed it

Thanks Senior Friday. Gotta love beach volleyball!
I thought it was interesting that the one Belgian women player was 6′4″ and weighed 190 lbs, but you would have never guessed by looking at her!

Yeah, some of them are giants, but their butts are usually exceptional. Must be all that jumping.
As for eye position, they’re looking at the freakin’ ball.
FWIW, I think the gymnasts are the most talented movers in the Olympics. Females especially, because they have the balance beam to deal with. Even a mediocre performance is amazing.
