Increase Your Chin up or Pull up Video Challenge: We Have a Winner

A HUGE thanks to all that entered the pull up/chin up challenge!  Awesome!

If you are not sure what we are talking about, check out this post below

Video Challenge: Increase Back Size and Strength with Chinup and Pullups

At the end, we had 2 people that completed the challenge, see their videos below for their before and after.

Keep in mind, this was only from the training information in the link above and within 30 days!

Nathan Before
3 Pullups

Nathan After
6 Pullups (+3, DOUBLED his reps)**
**this was by NOT directly training pullups for most of the time!

Kevin Before
5 Pullups with fat grips (2inch diameter)
1 Pullup with bodyweight + 75 lbs
14 Chinups
All done at a bodyweight of 160 lbs

Kevin After
11 Pullups with fat grips (2 inch diameter) (+6)
Almost 1 Pullup with 90 lbs
17 Chinups (+3)
Bodyweight at 170 (gained 10 pounds!)

Since there were only 2, I decided to skip the voting since both were awesome and declare BOTH winners.

So both of them get

I) All 3 Crazy Professor Webinars Released From the Vault

Neuromechanics of Movement
Metabolic Flexibility: Burn that fat!
Sports Supplements:  The good, bad and maybes

II) 1 Hour Phone Consult with me

Customized to your needs and you can ask me any question you want
Currently at $90 value and going up in price very soon

II) Added Bonus

I am working on a top secret project that will be out in late Sept (got pushed out now).  I can’t  reveal the details yet, but you will get a copy of that for FREE too.  Estimated  value is around $100 (final price has not been set yet)

Summary

The method that they used is based on Gym Movement/Biofeedback.  If you missed it, checkout the post below where I detail the EXACT method they used to see some major changes in only 30 days.   Nathan spent most of his time really working on rows, since pullups and chinups themselves did not test well.  In the end he still managed to double his reps on the pull-up.   So much for being so worried if something is not testing well.

3 Steps to Adding Muscle and Strength to your back with pullups and biofeedback

If you are not currently testing your exercises, you are only guessing.   Find out how to test them for more muscle and strength in record time by clicking HERE.

Huge thanks again to everyone that participated!!

I will contact the 2 winners later today or they can shoot me an email at the contact tab above.

Motivation Monday: When To Start

I get this question all the time.

“When is the best time to start a new fitness routine?”

Good question.

When is the best time to start anything?

For today’s Motivation Monday I will turn it over to Seth Godin

“When to start

* The best time to start is when you’ve got  enough money in the bank to support all contingencies.
* The best time to start is when the competition is  far behind in technology, sophistication and market acceptance.
* The best time to start is when the competition  isn’ttoo far behind, because then you’ll spend too long  educating the market.
* The best time to start is when everything at home  is stable and you can really focus.
* The best time to start is when you’re out of debt.
* The best time to start is when no one is already  working on your idea.
* The best time to start is when your patent comes  through.
* The best time to start is after you’ve got all your  VC funding.
* The best time to start is when the political  environment is more friendly than it is now.
* The best time to start is after you’ve got your  degree.
* The best time to start is after you’ve worked all  the kinks out of your plan.
* The best time to start is when you’re sure it’s  going to work.
* The best time to start is after you’ve hired the  key marketing person for the new division.
* The best time to start was last year. The best  opportunities are already gone.
* The best time to start is before some pundit  declares your segment passe. Too late.
* The best time to start is when the new generation  of processors is shipping.
* The best time to start is when the geopolitical  environment settles down.

Actually, as you’ve probably guessed, the best time to start was last year. The second best time to start is right now.”

I agree with Seth that the time is NOW.

No waiting, start doing something TODAY!

No more waiting for the perfect time.

It does not exist.

Comments?

Let me know what you think and what you are starting today! Maybe it is just getting to the gym.  Maybe it is testing your exercises?  Whatever it is, post them below!

2 Key Principles to More Muscle and Strength: The SAID Principle and Transfer

Get the Flash Player to see this player.
Click here to view this video on your iPhone or to download to your computer.

Watch the video above to learn

  • 2 very important principles for more muscle and strength
  • How to use them
  • Eliminate all the confusion about exercise selection out there
  • And much more!

By learning some key prinicples, you can drammatically increase your strength and muscle gains in the gym in record time, so in this series the professor is here to help out!.

I SAID….

Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demand If you want to get better at a bench press, the SAID principle dictates that you should bench press. If you want to get better at kettlebell presses or swings, you will need to practice them, not Turkish Get Ups.

Seems simple I know, but it gets lost on many people.

Let’s go one layer deeper. If your goal is to increase your bench press in a Powerlifing competition, that is a bit more specific than just improve your bench press. In a powerlifting meet, you have to follow audible commands. The three commands are “start, press, rack.” Once you get a hand off of the bar, you hold it at lockout until you hear the “start” command. Then you lower it to your chest and pause there until you hear the “press” command. Once you finish the lift (hopefully), you hold it at lockout until you hear the “rack” command. There are few more steps here than just lowering it to your chest and back up, so we need to be more specific with some of our training. I did not do this and in my second meet I completing missed 2 of the attempts because I did not do the right thing at the right time. The first time I did not wait for the press command and the second time I did not wait for the start command.

Bugger. I also never practiced that way in training either.

“You do what you train!” –Tim Larkin, Creator of Target Focused Training

If you have ever seen Tim speak, he emphasizes this point over and over and over, for good reason!

The SAID principle states that you will adapt to exactly what you do.

Want better computer guy posture?  Sit at a computer in bad posture!

Want to miss all your bench press attempts?  Do what many do (nobody here though!) and go to the gym, try for a max effort attempt and miss (spotter gets in his back workout pulling the bar off your chest).

By missing each time, you are telling your body and brain that is can NOT be done.  Not good.

Transfer

Transfer is where we do one thing and get better at something else. More specifically, this is positive transfer.

I did a bunch of squats and I got better at deadlifts. Squatting, positively transferred to my increased deadlift.

The reverse can happen too.

Let’s say I want a bigger vertical jump, so I started doing BOSU ball jump squats. When I tested my vertical jump later, it was less. Crap. Bosu ball jump squats NEGATIVELY transferred to your vertical. Stay the heck of that darn thing anyway.

4 Steps To More Muscle and Strength

The only true way to know is to test it. I like testing.

1) What is your goal? You have tested where you are at for your goal, right?

2) What do you think will help you reach your goal?

3) Add this in for a period of time (say 2-6 weeks)

4) Retest your goal. If better, you were correct! If not, you were wrong and try again.

4 Steps In Action: Bigger Bench Press

You want a bigger bench press.  Awesome.

Here are the 4 steps in action that I take each client threw.

1) Goal. Bigger bench. Ok, how much bigger? Bench press 225 for 1 rep within 6 months.

Where are you at now? Currently can bench press 205 for 1 rep.

2) What do you think will help?

SAID specific: Doing more single reps since I am currently doing lots of 3 x 10 work or Positive Transfer: I am already doing lots of singles (SAID work), so I think 2 board bench press will help

3) Add 2 board bench press to your training whenever it tests well. (If you are not sure how to test for it, get it for free HERE).

4) Retesting. I would not wait until 6 months to test it, so I would test every 4 weeks or so. If no progress is made within 8 weeks I would try something else.

The timelines are all relative and a good coach can help you here, but the key is to TEST IT! Many don’t have specific goals and if they do (you know, the people you see out there in the gyms), they don’t test it to see how they are doing on their goals!

Summary

Now you know all about the SAID principle and transfer.

Two huge concepts to help you add more muscle and strength while progressing towards your fitness goals.

Be sure to watch the professor in the video above for the key points! Follow the 4 step process and let me know how it goes for you!

Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez at UFC 121

This is going to be a great fight between these two.   Who do you think will win?

I still believe Brock is going to win. Velasquez is a skilled and well conditioned fighter, but I don’t think he can compete with Brock’s size, strength and speed.  Last I checked, Brock was sent here from a distant time and they just chiseled him out of ice.  I don’t think he belongs in the 21st century.

I was right last time with my prediction and he took several very hard strikes to the head and was able to win.  Plus I am a Gopher and have driven by Brock’s training center here in Minnesota a few times this summer.  I love the inside of it too and the name of one of my favorite bands of all time (see if you catch it in the video).

I love these inside look at MMA training, especially when my man Henry Rollins is doing the narration.  They are like crack.

I loved this quote

“If you want to fly with the eagles, you can’t hang out with the crows”–Brock Lesnar

I have heard different versions of it before, but it is so true.

“How can I get better?  This is what we do here”  –Brock Lesnar.

I like better.
