The Windz Up!

Recently it was gusting up to 42 mph, so you know what that means! KITEBOARDING! A few buddies and I headed up to Father Henepin state park on Mille Lacs for an epic day about 2 weeks ago. Wow. it was the windiest conditions I have ever seen. I got all my stuff rigged (8m Cabrinha Switchblade II kite) and stood on shore for about 20 minutes deciding if I was going to go out and visualizing everything going perfectly on my launch. I had a friend launch the kite and went off into the water. So far so good.

The launch is on shore meaning the wind is blowing into the shore; so if something goes wrong you end up on shore (not good).  To make it worse, there is a tree just outside the reach of the kite lines (which are about 100 feet long) and it looked like a Charlie Brown kite eating tree.   The slightest wrong move and the kite goes into the tree and hopefully you don’t. I made it past the tree after the kite launch, and into the water only to find out that I got pulled quite a bit as I tried to get in my board.  I could hold the kite ok with my feet on the bottom of the lake, but even pulling up one foot to stick it in the board caused me to inch very close to the tree.  I had visions of that stupid kite eating tree again.

Special thanks to Tighe for holding me down (literally) while I got my feet into my board. A few turns later and no screw ups and I was out away from shore.  A huge sigh of relief.

The wind was cranking and it was by far the highest wind I have ever ridden in. It was past the point of “I pissed my wetsuit windy” and was rapidly approaching into “I sheeet my drawers” windy.   Wow. On a lake in Minnesota there were some waves around 6 feet high. Once I got used it a bit, I had a blast!!! I had so much fun I almost made Randy late as I lost track of time and rode, pounding the waves, for 4 hours straight. Yahooo!!  I made in just in time though.

Some times you have to know when to stay within your limits and play just on the edge of them.   Some days you have to extend them a bit.

Inception: Best Movie of the Summer

I still think this was the best movie of the summer. Very entertaining and Christopher Nolan did not assume the viewers were idiots dreuling on themsleves. It took him 10 years from the start of the idea to having it as a full film. He opted to do “The Dark Knight” first to play around with special effects on a new level to make “Inception” realistic.

I’ve played around with Lucid Dreaming after reading Tim Ferris’s post on it.  The book is quite good and so far I am able to recall most dreams, but I can only alter them on a few occasions. I believe that once I can pull a lift or a new kiteboard move in a dream, I should be able to do it for real in a few tries. I guess I will find out!

PR with No Sleep

In the video I talk about not sleeping, setting PRs, writing up my dissertation study on Energy Drinks (how ironic), deadlines, and Seth Godin.   And yes, I did get a PR (Personal Record) on neutral presses.   Although I don’t recommend going 38 hours without sleep.  It is brutal, but some times it happens and it is nice to know you can survive it.

Since it was so nice out at the end of August, I decided to head up to Reddy Creek on Mille Lacs and it was amazing!  I stayed over night and rode both days = sweet!!

My Birthday Was Awesome!

A huge thanks to everyone that wished me a happy birthday back in August.  All the emails, tweets, and facebook posts were amazing and very much appreciated!! Hard to believe I am 36 now, but I don’t feel 36.  I hope to never feel my age.  Age is just a number anyway. My wonderful wife was able to get me a SIGNED copy of Dave Mustaine’s new autobiography!   Dave was in Metallica for a bit and then started his own band Megadeth.  A huge thanks to the metal heads at the book store for their help to make it happen too.  Always trust a metal head.

Fasting

Here is a tip.  If you are like me and find your house empty of food today, you have two options. 1) Time for some metabolic distress testing and eat the crusty bags of ramen noodles.  If you can expand your metabolic flexibility and not crash afterwards, that is good.   It needs to be pointed out that this is not how you want to eat all the time, but the goal is to get away with as much “bad” food as possible and still look good naked and perform well. 2) Do a 24 hour fast If you are out of food, perfect!  Don’t eat!  If you are looking for information on fasting to lose weight, I highly recommend Brad’s ebook Eat Stop Eat as he has a fully updated version out now!  I give it two thumbs way up (full review coming soon).    Pick it up today at Eat Stop Eat and thank me later.

This Motivational Monday is coming at you bright and early to get you pumped up to attack the week.
Personally, am just getting over a cold that knocked me on my butt for the past 2 days.  Ugh.   I found out that you can still go 6 for 6 in PRs (personal records) in a grip contest though and hit some PRs in the gym while being  sick.  I would still rather feel better, but getting weaker while I am sick is not an option.
Hopefully you are not sick and the good part of being sick is that it makes you appreciate being well.
Speaking of being well and kicking butt in th gym, the video above is insane.
You seriously need to see it.  WOW!!
