Dave Barr: Exclusive Interview About Supplements, Testosterone, Growth Hormone, and Exercise

Dave Barr: Exclusive Interview About Supplements, Testosterone, Growth Hormone, and Exercise

One of the things that I love doing is hanging out, talking shop about exercise, nutrition, and movement.    I feel so honored to be able to pick the brains of many of the top people in the industry.

Movement, Movement, Movement

A few weeks ago, Cal Dietz from the U of MN left me a message that Neil Rampe, the therapist for the AZ Diamondbacks was going ot be in town, so I should stop down for a movement pow wow.   I was sooooo stoked and it was a great meeting.

Three hours there flew by like it was 20 minutes.  Movement of all forms was discussed from cranial work for more internal rotation (like 30 degrees more in minutes), breathing patterns, asymmetries, soft tissue work (a great local soft tissue expert was present too), and how to extract maximal performance from athletes.  Great, great time.

More This Weekend

Just last night I was hanging out with Dave, Brad Nelson, Adam T Glass and Frankie Faires and will be with them and many more today too.  Aaron S from UND (great strength coach at Univ of North Dakota) will be sleeping on my couch for 2 nights (check out his blog HERE) and a few others are scheduled to be in town also.  The amount of information I will be able to pick up and use after just a few days is going to be insane, and I am so excited about it.  I am like a kid in a candy store.  Whooo ha.

Conferences for Vacation?

I am a huge geek and I go to conferences on exercise physiology for fun.  This past May Jodie and I flew out to Seattle for a vacation and I attended the American College of Sports Medicine’s Annual conference for 3 days.  I decided to not present this year, so I just got to hang out with much less stress and absorb as much as I could (read, pester people at posters about their research).

I had a blast and learned tons of new things, although some of the presentations can be a bit dry.  Ok, a bit dry is an understatement, but I endure this all to bring you just a few worthwhile tidbit of info to have you set another PR.

Enter the Barr

Good thing there are other geeks (albeit with much bigger arms) than me there like my good buddy Dave Barr.   Dave is a very bright guy and has a great background in exercise physiology and nutrition.  He currently works for Muscle and Fitness, so be sure to check out his blog there below

David Barr’s blog at Muscle and Fitness

I was able to corner him and got to pick his brain.  Luckily for you I have it on tape here!

Sit back as Dave Barr drops knowledge bombs from the ACSM 2009 Annual Conference.

Note this was previously released as a special bonus, but now I am making it available to everyone.  The conference was this past May, but many time oral presentations have data that is not published for many months to even years after it was presented (if it gets published); so this info is still cutting edge.

Enjoy!

Thanks Dave!!

Let me know what you think about this in the comments section!

Shoulder Issue with Kettlebell Pressing: Video Testimonial for Mike T Nelson

Shoulder Issue with Kettlebell Pressing: Video Testimonial for Mike T Nelson

George Samuelson CK-FMS

I have owed Mike T Nelson this video for about three months now. My Name is George Samuelson from New Jersey. This session with Mike T Nelson was at the end of 2009 last year to address some of my present press patterning issues on my left side and also work on some kettlebell military press

Basically why this video (below) took so long is for the past lets say month or two months of a hideous viral infection like many other people, just kind of  affected with low energy levels so I was trained and whatever I have to do.

However my training sessions are still included good amount of Z Health mobility work to improve my movement.   Specifically some of the drills Mike had given me. Also during the past while doing lifts or exercises, my body has given me good feed back on going ahead and what to do for that day.

I am very happy to be able to say with even with all this stuff going on I have been able to still maintain my standard 32 kilo and 36 kilo press pretty easily.

Also during this time frame, I have put on about 5 pounds of muscle and have actually going down some body fat as well.

Doctor has asked me if I have been taking anything and I just basically told some pressing and drills, they just don’t really get it.

So if you get chance, I recommend you schedule session with Mike, whether its at a workshop by going and seeing him.

If you can’t make it out to him, make sure that you do read his blog, make sure you also sign up for his newsletter.  Its a great resource to have and thanks.

I am pissed, a trip inside my head

I Am Pissed!  A Trip Inside My Head

skeleton

I am really pissed off right now and I can’t focus on anything else, so you will get an inside look into my brain. Caution, you have been warned.

As readers of this blog know, I do training and nutrition work to get professional and every day athletes of all types performance increases. I’ve been doing it for several years now and I’ve spent well over $200,000 over the years on getting better at my craft via college, seminars, certifications, books, etc. This is not meant to impress you, but if you are serious about something you have to pay to play. I know many others that have paid very large sums to practice their craft, so this is no different.

Why I am Pissed

I am pissed off to no end now because I could not get the result I wanted from an athlete I worked with this morning. Note, this has absolutely nothing to do with the athlete and everything to do with me. I feel like I failed him because I did not have a solution to his pain issue. We spent 1.5 hours trying all sorts of things, with very little change. My agreement is that if I can’t get a performance increases or a large change in your pain, the session is free. The athletes satisfaction is my primary concern and I fully believe that if I don’t deliver, I should NOT be compensated. End of story.

The System Is Broke

This is the direct opposite to most professions. Take physical therapy (not to pick on them, but….) if you (not anyone who reads this blog, way too bright for that) are an average PT and you take 12 sessions to get a result and you charge $50 per session, you made $600. If you are a stellar PT and you get the result in 3 sessions, at the same price, you get $150. You were clearly better (got the same result in LESS time), but you made about 1/4 as much. How much incentive is there for you to get better? Not much!

True, that it is different when you own your own business, since if you suck, hopefully you will go out of business. If you suck, I don’t want you around to drag everyone else down and please go away and the sooner the better. I won’t get into the whole fitness business and how anyone can take a weekend cert by mail and be a fitness trainer. It makes me vomit in my mouth a bit each time I read it. Ugh. I need some mouth wash. Ok, I am back now. Where was I? I know business is very complicated and there are times where the most knowledgeable are also piss broke, but if you work for a large company, there is normally very little incentive to get better.

You’re Insane

I have many great friends in the field who are doctors, physical therapist, other trainers, consultants etc and almost all of them tell me I am completely out of my tree, coo coo insane, have a melon where my head should be because this is my expectation below

I expect that 99% of the people that walk through my door that I can get a dramatic performance increase (also many times equalling a decrease in pain) in ONE session that last 1-2 hours.

I’ve had many long discussions with many of them arguing that IF this is even physiologically possible. They say no and I say it is possible. If pain and performance are primarily (not entirely of course) controlled by the brain, we know that you can make changes in the brain extremely fast (as I have learned in Z-Health).

Yes, there are times that there will be a biomechanical and/or biochemical issue, but even then you should still be able to see a large change in one session.

I’ve seen athletes with missing rotators via MRI have no limitations on shoulder function and no pain.

Is this the norm? No, but it can happen. My point is that I feel the brain and nervous system are the most plastic systems in the body and are also open to the greatest change at the fastest speed (this is supported by research on brain neuroplasticity).

Does this mean we ONLY need to focus on the nervous system–no, of course not; but if pain reduction and performance are your goals, you have to address the nervous system.

Victory Destroys Knowledge

That was a great quote from Dan John. While I do remember many of the “successes” I’ve had, my failures stick in my brain like a canary in a coal mine. You notices I put “successes” in quotes since I did not do ANY of the darn work, the athlete did all the work and hence they should get the credit. I just helped point them in a better direction. They had the discipline to do the work!

I’ve been very fortunate to work with athletes to get them out of pain, avoid surgeries, compete in the Olympics pain free, bend over to pick up their kids without pain, take a ski trip vacation and ski 5 days in a row for the first time ever, etc. These are all great and completed by highly motivated athletes.

What I remember more are the cases where I could not do anything. We tried for 2-3 sessions or more with no change. Granted, these athletes usually had been everywhere and done everything, but I still feel like I should have had a solution.

I know that their pain is not my issue and that it takes many reps to over ride the lifetime of poor reps they have accumulated and that nobody has a 100% solution for chronic pain. Look no further than research on the success of various low back pain treatments and many of them are acute, no chronic pain issues. Yet somehow I feel I should have all the answers. They come to me as their last hope and if I can’t help them in a very short period of time I feel like I let them down and have failed them. Completely unrealistic I know, but I still feel pissed when I can’t get a result. I know there is a solution and when it evades me I can’t stand it. Yes I am neurotic too.

What To Do

To keep myself sane, I don’t work primarily with chronic pain clients. The toll on my psyche is more than I can handle and the logical conclusion is that the better you get, the harder the cases you get and at the end you will only be left with your failures. I know I can’t handle that. I do, however, take on “hard cases” to force myself to learn. I learn more from the difficult ones than from any others. Fear of failure will drive you much farther than success, but you need to be aware of the cost.

Performance increases are relatively easy for me now. I know that sounds like a super arrogant statement, but it is true. Most athletes have just a slight (or major) movement issue that is impairing their current performance. Remove that (which could be mobility, visual, vestibular or soft tissue) and performances goes up. Think of it as removing the king pin from a log jam. Once you do that, the whole river flows again just by that one minor change.

Your Trip Is Complete

There you have it. A trip inside my brain to see what drives me. I did warn you that it is a bit of a scary place. I’ve been told by multiple well meaning people that I need more knowledge like I need a hole in the head and I should spend more time on marketing. My business model of primarily seeing athletes for single sessions once a month or even less is the worst possible thing to do. What you realize very fast is that once someone is out of pain, they forget they ever had pain extremely fast, so your time for referrals is very short. Getting new clients routinely is much harder than working with them routinely. I do have some reoccurring clients, but most come for an acute change and that is what I deliver.

While I am spending more time learning marketing and business now (and they are no evil and truly needed), my true passion is bridging the chasm between research land and practice. We can learn a ton from both and in the process and I move step by step closer to that 99%. I may never get there, but if you aim high and miss by a bit, you are still much higher than if you aimed low. Don’t tell this to my psyche if you see it lying on the road somewhere trying to hitch hike!

A HUGE Thank You!

Thanks to all for their support and reading this blog. It truly means a ton to me and I promise I will do everything I can to help as many athletes of all types destroy their old personal records. I feel incredibly fortunate that I know exactly why I was put on this earth and exactly what I want/need to do. Many spend their lifetimes looking and wandering, so I am truly blessed and grateful.

I need to send a very special shout out to my soon to be wife Jodie too for all of her endless support and to my family. Thank you!!

Inside Look at Grip n Rip 2.0 from Swager Strength

Inside Look at Grip n Rip 2.0 from Swager Strength

Swager Strength

If you missed Grip n Rip 2.0 this year, you missed out.   I unfortunately was noly able to stay there for about 3 hours in the AM and since Jodie and I were hopping on plane that early afternoon to Baja Mexico (more details on that soon too).

Great stuff and the guys from Swager Strength were there in full force too. I picked up one of their 2 inch solid axle thick bars. SWEET!

This is about twice the diameter of a normal bar and there is absolutely ZERO flex to it. I love it so far.

Check out the video below of Adam Glass, Brad Nelson, and the guys at Swager Strength for an inside look at Grip n Rip 2.0

Grip n Rip 2.0

Summary

Great stuff and I will hopefully make it to the next one for sure!

Be sure to check out the fine folks at Swager Strength for some amazing products that you will not find anywhere.

Tell them I sent ya. I get nothing to promote them. Not one cent, but they are stand up guys who make excellent products at very fair prices.

If you went to Grip n Rip, drop me a comment on how it went and what you thought of the event.

Phone Consultation Testimonial for Mike T Nelson: Low Back and Hip Pain

Phone Consultation Testimonial for Mike T Nelson: Low Back and Hip Pain

Another testimonial from a recent phone consult I did

I had been experiencing low back, hip and leg pain as well are forearm pain for several months. After going to my chiropractor and back doctor several times with no relief, I decided that I wanted to work with a Z-Health practitioner. However, there were none in my immediate area. I also wanted to work with a Z-Health Master Trainer. I contacted Mike regarding a phone consultation.

During our consultation Mike asked me multiple questions about my health and the pain I was experiencing. He had me doing different movements while on the phone and spent as much time with me as needed.

Mike had me to do arm circles, foot work and eye drills as well as recommending some changes to my diet.

He has continued to correspond with me via e-mail to provide additional suggestions to reduce and manage my pain including breathing exercises.

My pain is now greatly reduced and I am sure it will further diminish overtime as I continue to do all that Mike as recommended.

I would highly recommend Mike to anyone who is in pain.

—Brett Williamson

Now It Is Your Turn!

A Huge thanks to Brett for taking the time to write that up and taking the bull by the horns to look for an answer to his pain and movement issues.

If you are interested in a phone consult, for a limited time they are only $90 per session (normal rate is $110) and are 100% guaranteed.  If you are not happy for ANY reason, there is NO charge.

Drop me an email by clicking HERE to move better with less pain today!

Gym Movements DVD sold out for now

Gym Movements DVD Sold Out For Now

Just wanted to give everyone an update on what is going on.

As you may have noticed, the initial run of Gym Movements DVDs are gone.  Thanks to everyone that picked one up!  I talked to Frankie just the other night and they are expecting more to come around April 1 or sooner.

Feedback Updates

To the dismay of my marketing friends, I am going to share with you the feedback on the Gym Movements that I have received so far.  I have nothing to hide, so you will always get the real deal and the inside word.  I was told not to do this, but I want everyone to be on the same page with the latest updates and inside workings.

Pros

People are still busting PRs left and right like crazy! Every day I hear from someone else that is doing the protocol and hitting all time PRs. I love it! I never get tired of hearing people destroying their old performances. Yeah!!  Many times, it is the highlight of my day to check my email or the comments here and see people achieve another personal record.   I get excited every time I hear about it!  Thanks to all for sharing their PRs!!

Be sure to check out Adam’s new blog below, of which Extreme Human Performance is honored to be a sponsor of

Walk the Road Less Traveled

Cons

Some were not happy with the overall production quality of the DVD (only 2 people have contacted me directly with that concern).   I will be the first to admit it was ok, but far from stellar production. It worked, but was nothing crazy on that front.

Others said their was no back story on the presenters (1 person).  Who are they and where did the come from?

In hindsight I would agree with this too, and since I have known them for years it did not dawn on me (I know it seems so simple now) that many would want more back drop than just what to do.

Confusion. So I test my exercises, reps, sets, etc and then what?
The first DVD was set up to get people to start testing. It was not set up to answer every question known to man about biofeedback training.   This may have added a bit to the confusion in the process though.

The Solution

In hindsight, I am probably the worst person to review a DVD of this type, since 1) I knew the presenters and their backgrounds already 2) I don’t care much about production, as long as I can see and hear what they are doing.  I’ve paid a lot of money for simple manuscirpts, poor conference recordings and DVDs that look like they were filmed with a 1920s camera.   I don’t mind as long as the information is solid.   Again, that is MY preference though.

Others (and rightfully so) are more concerned with those points.

To be perfectly honest, my biggest concerned when I first started testing movements with range of motion over 2 years ago was “Does this work?”

I spent a long time working directly with Frankie to make sure that it does work. I had my online and in person athletes do it to get more data. I measured my heart rate, resting metabolic rate, heart rate variablity and other measurements to see if they were close (in general, they were). I kept track of my weight, body fat percentage for over 2 years, even had under water weighing and Bod Pod measurements done for body fat.

My other fear is that people would buy the DVD and not take any action and they would not test their movement.

To my relief, both of my fears turned out to be NOT true; which is great!

Going Forward

I want to see everyone that bought a DVD from this site to break PRs like crazy, and I am committed to make it happen.

The conference call for the early buyers is set for this coming Tues, Feb 23 at 9pm CST. This was the best comprise on times I could find. It will be recorded for those that can’t make it.

I have a special email address set up to get your questions ahead of time, so email me  by clicking HERE  (Gym Movement Conf Call Questions) Email me your feedback and questions by this coming Tues at noon CST.

I am working on getting your email addresses, so in case you don’t read this blog I will email you directly via Aweber to get the conference call log in details to you.  Look for it in your email box Monday or earlier.

Conference call #2 Just Added

For everyone that bought the DVD I will have another conference call to be held mid March.   This will be a way for those that missed the first one (and purchased early) and for everyone that has the DVD currently.

On these calls, I will answer ANY question related to the product, share my experience with it, and give you some tips to be breaking PRs left and right.

At the end of these calls, I will conduct another survey to see if anyone has any issues. I will do whatever it takes to get all of you on the right track and if I have to email you directly or even pick up the phone and call you, I will to make sure you are destroying it in the gym!

Summary

I subscribe to the philosophy of “fail forward as fast as possible.” I could have sat on the sidelines and watched others promote the Gym Movements DVD and waited for more feedback before I jumped in. I decided not to since I really believe the information needs to get out there for more to test it.  I had tested if for a long time and believed it to work extremely well (which all the feedback so far supports).

The downside is that the process will have some bumps in the road, and that is fine.

I will do whatever it takes to make sure everyone is 100% happy.

If you are still not happy, email me directly via the contact page above and I will make sure you get all of your money back; no questions asked.

Again, if you are not happy, you NEED to email myself or Gym Movements directly so we can get your issue fixed ASAP. I am not physic, so if I don’t know you are unhappy I can’t help you.

While I did not create the product, I did promote it so I will take the responsibility to make sure everyone is satisfied.  So far I have received only 2 emails from those that were not happy, and they have been taken care of already.

I look forward to talking with many of you this coming Tues night.

Any comments, post away at the bottom and let me hear about those PRs too.  Off to the gym to set some PRs myself.

The Secret To Adding Muscle and Strength as fast as possible

The Secret To Adding Muscle and Strength as Fast as Possible

Bob Diry

Bob Diry, circa 1914

I know you see this advertised everywhere and everyone seems to have their own secret on how to do it.

I would know, since like you, I have spent well over half of my life looking for the secret to gaining muscle and strength.

I’ve read supplement ads from cover to cover, more research studies than you can shake a stick at, physiology text books, interviewed and chatted with many top strength and nutrition coaches, attended several conferences, certifications and seminars.  Heck, I’ve even given seminars on those topics.

I’ve spent 14+ years full time in college and paid a couple hundred thousand in tuition (and still will be paying–yikes) looking for the “secrets’.

I’ve even spent money on supplements, most of which turned out to be utterly worthless and only made my wallet lighter.

A new version of Supertraining came out and I was so stoked to get it as a Christmas present and bring it on vacation to read and relax.

Pay attention now and I will reveal this secret for training.

Are you ready?

Are you sure?

Here it comes!

Here is the secret from the very wise words of Dr. Zatsiorsky

Lift
* As often as possible
* As heavy as possible
* As fresh as possible

That is the “secret” to progress!   Seriously it really is as much of a secret as you will get.

How you do that is the art portion of the equation.

While there are many methods I find testing your movement (biofeedback) to be the best way to put you on track.

Summary

You job now is to accumulate as much volume (weight x reps) as possible, while putting the least amount of effort (staying fresh) as often as possible (frequency).

I did not say it would be easy though, did I?  Anything worth attaining will require work, but you need to work intelligently.

What are your secrets dear reader?  What has helped you make progress in the fastest way possible?  Let me know by posting a comment as I love comments!

Gym Movements Biofeedback, Z-Health Joint Mobility, Where is the hard data?

Gym Movements Biofeedback, Z-Health Joint Mobility, Where is the hard data?

Walter Miller

Walter Miller, Strength Athlete, Middleweight wrestling champion circa 1919

I am back!  Did you miss me?

Thanks for your patience with my response to comments last week. Jodie and I had a blast in Baja Mexico at a small town called La Ventana. We went down with some friends to hang out, see that orange thing in the sky that they call the sun and kiteboard.

We had a blast and Jodie did great kiteboarding too! I got out and rode 4 days (every day that there was wind) and even did a 7 mile downwinder back to where we were staying. More details to come soon.

Gym Movements, Z-Health, Hard Numbers Please!

One of the requests that I have received is one asking for hard numbers. Since I am a researcher, I like numbers. Heck, I did a whole MS in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics, so I better like numbers! ha! To be honest, they were never my strong suit, but after years of practice I got pretty good at it. When I started I did not think any math beyond Calc 4 even existed, wow, I was wrong.

I need to thank Kevin who is a strength coach on the East Coast for taking the time to do this. While this is far from a peer reviewed, placebo controlled study, it does show us some important things.

Take it away Kevin!

Mike

I purchased Gym Movements and I am really looking forward to the video. This past weekend I have been testing myself and 2 of my high school clients with both Z Health and some of the material I saw from the Gym Movements clips. this past weekend I had a girl I train do the following

Step 1 Toe touch test

Step 2. Vertical Jump Test (18 inches on a jump mat)

Step 3 do a “bad squat on the toes for 10 reps

Step 4 Jump again (16.4 inches)

Step 5. do some Z Health drills (ankle and hip mobility)

Step 6 Retest vertical and hit 18.2

Step 6. Static stretch (hit 16 inches)

Step 7 Z Health drills (18.5)

She looked at me like I was crazy and asked what I was doing? I filled her in and she was very interested in what I had to say

With me this weekend I have been doing static stretch tests, Active Isolates tests and Z Health test and EVERY TIME. I get more range of motion with the Z Health Drills I learned from Sara’s DVD.

I will let you know what I think about the Gym Movements DVD, but I think a combination of the Gym Movements DVD and getting the Z R-Phase is what I need

I am amazed how much your body “clears up” by just doing the ankle Mobs.

Thanks

Kevin

What Did We Learn

Now we have some hard numbers to show that what you do training wise and mobility wise has an IMMEDIATE effect upon your body.

Good training and mobility results is massive changes, very fast! I first learned this at the R-Phase cert from Dr. Cobb. When I do Z-Health sessions, the whole premise is that you have them walk (gait) and then try a Z-Health drill, then have them walk again. If their gait (walking movement) is better, that is a good drill. If not, then try another drill.

Exercise will have the same effect.

Good exercise= better movement and performance

6 Tips to Prevent Weight Gain on Vacation

6 Tips to Prevent Weight Gain on Vacation

Wow, is that an oxymoron?  I know most use vacation as a time to destroy bags of Cheetos and hang out at all you can eat buffets for hours.

This is not my idea of a vacation, but that does not mean you need to be all worried about your nutrition every waking hour–it is VACATION remember?

The question I get is what to do on vacation so that you don’t return 5 lbs heavier than when you left.

This past Nov Jodie and I went on a trip to S. Padre TX and since we are in Baja right now,  I thought this would be a great time to give you an inside peak into the vacation fridge and offer up some tips.

A look in my vacation fridge

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Here is one tasty breakfast we had!

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

6 Tips to Vacation Nutrition

1) Pick an active vacation

If you move around more, it is just way easier to burn calories.  This does not mean you need to do marathons for your vacation (although I know those that do, which is cool), but sitting in the sun for 7 days in a row rubbing coconut oil on your ever expanding gut gets old.

2) Hit up the grocery store

You don’t need to troll the buffet for every meal!  Get a place with a fridge so you can store some healthy foods and save some dinero too

3) Bring some basics

I like to bring a good protein powder with me, just in case I stuck somewhere without much for food.  Proteins are usually the hardest to get when traveling and most of the time they require the most prep too.  If you have a good protein powder (I like protein factory), you can easily find some veggies or fruits to go with it.

4) Intermittent Fasting

Yikes, I just said that you can fast on vacation!  I know that sounds insane, but if you know you are having a crazy travel day, food may be hit or miss and airport food is crap-tastic, do a 24 hour fast.    It would be a great way to start off in a bit of a caloric deficit too.     Check out the interview I did with Brad Pilon of Eat Stop Eat HERE (1 hour of audio free).

Review of Eat Stop Eat : Intermittent Fasting to Lose Body Fat

5) Exercise!

I know that sounds nuts too, but go for a run on the beach, do some body weight exercises or bring your TRX Gym in a bag (I brought mine to S Padre and I have it here in Baja with me too)

Push Up Variations

6) Exercise volume

I like to plan my deloads around my vacation time and this works well with clients too.  If you know you are going to be gone in 5 weeks, I have them do a ton of volume (again, I use the Gym Movements DVD on biofeedback to help plan day to day variations) before they leave.   On vacation they can just hit up some work from #5 above and they are set.

The downside is that you may be a bit sore during the first day or two, but it works great.

Summary

There are my 6 tips to prevent the travel/vacation weight gain.   I normally tend to lose weight on vacation and I do enjoy a dark beer (no piss water please) during the evening watching the sunset with Jodie.
